All that hype you’ve heard about Monument Valley? Believe it, every last word of it. As far as I’m concerned, the apex of the intersection of art and app is right here, folks. The aim of each screen is to guide a silent princess to the goal, usually atop a series of towers that appear at first impossible to traverse. Some blocks are able to be manipulated through a swipe of the finger; others through navigating the princess to buttons on the floor. The flawless art enables Escher-esque illusions, requiring you to consider the space in a way I’ve never before seen in any puzzle game, much less an app. The sound design is also lush and detailed. It’s wholly and completely worth the entrance price, an enchanting and elegant experience of a game.
Inspired by minimalist 3D design, optical illusions and palaces and temples from around the world, every monument is a unique, hand-crafted world to explore.
